Advance Report on Durable Goods Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories and Orders
November 2009
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in November increased $0.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $166.9 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This was the second monthly increase in the last three months. This followed a 0.6 percent October
decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 2.0 percent. Excluding defense, new orders decreased slightly. Computers and electronic products, also up two of the last three months, had the largest increase, $0.9 billion or 3.7 percent to $25.7 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in November, up three consecutive months, increased $0.5 billion or 0.3 percent to $175.9 billion. This followed a 0.7 percent October increase. Machinery, up two of the last three months, had the largest increase, $0.4 billion or 2.0 percent to $22.6 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in November, down fourteen consecutive months, decreased $4.9 billion or 0.7 percent to $724.5 billion.
This was the longest streak of consecutive monthly decreases since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.6 percent October
decrease. Transportation equipment, down thirteen of the last fourteen months, had the largest decrease, $5.2 billion or 1.2 percent to $418.1 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in November, down ten of the last eleven months, decreased $0.5 billion or 0.2 percent to $303.6 billion. This followed a slight increase in October. Computers and electronic products, down eleven
consecutive months, had the largest decrease, $0.2 billion or 0.4 percent to $42.8 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in November decreased $1.0 billion or 1.9 percent to $53.5 billion. Shipments increased $0.2 billion or 0.3 percent to $57.0
billion. Unfilled orders decreased $3.5 billion or 0.8 percent to $413.9 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $132.4 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in November increased $0.7 billion or 8.5 percent to $9.2 billion. Shipments decreased $0.2 billion or 1.4 percent to $10.8 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $1.7 billion or 1.2 percent to $135.6 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1 billion or 0.5 percent to $20.2 billion.
Revised October Data
Revised seasonally adjusted October figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $360.7 billion (revised from $360.5 billion); shipments, $369.5
billion (revised from $368.0 billion); unfilled orders, $729.4 billion (revised from $730.8 billion); and total inventories, $494.2 billion (revised from $493.0 billion).

September 2009
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in September increased $1.6 billion or 1.0 percent to $165.7 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This was the second increase in the last three months. This followed a 2.6 percent August decrease. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 0.9 percent. Excluding defense, new orders increased 0.5 percent. Machinery, up five of the last six months, had the largest increase, $1.7 billion or 7.9 percent to $23.4 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in September, up three of the last four months, increased $1.3 billion or 0.8 percent to $172.6 billion. This followed a 1.4 percent August decrease. Transportation equipment, also up three of the last four months, had the largest increase, $2.4 billion or 5.6 percent to $44.9 billion. This was led by nondefense aircraft and parts, which increased $1.4 billion.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in September, down twelve consecutive months, decreased $3.3 billion or 0.4 percent to $733.6 billion. This was the longest streak of consecutive monthly decreases since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.4 percent August decrease. Transportation equipment, down eleven of the last twelve months, had the largest decrease, $4.8 billion or 1.1 percent to $426.3 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in September, down nine consecutive months, decreased $3.1 billion or 1.0 percent to $305.0 billion. This followed a 1.5 percent August decrease. Transportation equipment, down two consecutive months, had the largest decrease, $2.0 billion or 2.2 percent to $89.1 billion.
Capital Goods
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in September increased $1.3 billion or 2.5 percent to $53.6 billion. Shipments increased $1.2 billion or 2.2 percent to $56.6 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $3.0 billion or 0.7 percent to $419.6 billion. Inventories decreased $2.3 billion or 1.7 percent to $132.4 billion. Defense new orders for capital goods in September increased $1.0 billion or 10.0 percent to $10.9 billion. Shipments increased $0.5 billion or 5.1 percent to $11.3 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $0.4 billion or 0.3 percent to $140.3 billion. Inventories decreased $0.4 billion or 1.8 percent to $19.8 billion.
Revised August Data
Revised seasonally adjusted August figures for all manufacturing industries were: new orders, $352.8 billion (revised from $352.9 billion); shipments, $360.0 billion (unchanged); unfilled orders, $736.8 billion (unchanged); and total inventories, $497.9 billion (revised from $498.2 billion).

This was the second decrease in the last three months. This followed a 4.8 percent July increase. Excluding transportation, new orders were down slightly. Excluding defense, new orders decreased 2.4 percent.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in August, down following two consecutive monthly increases, decreased $2.4 billion or 1.4 percent to $171.3 billion. This followed a 2.2 percent July increase.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in August, down eleven consecutive months, decreased $2.8 billion or 0.4 percent to $737.1 billion. This was the longest streak of consecutive monthly decreases since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 0.1 percent July decrease.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in August, down eight consecutive months, decreased $4.2 billion or 1.3 percent to $308.9 billion. This followed a 1.1 percent July decrease.
Capital Goods Industries
Nondefense
Nondefense new orders for capital goods in August decreased $4.0 billion or 7.1 percent to $52.7 billion.
Defense
Defense new orders for capital goods in August increased $0.1 billion or 1.1 percent to $9.9 billion.
Released September 25, 2009. This report presents advance information on two key business indicators: durable goods manufacturers' shipments and orders. Revised and more detailed estimates plus nondurable goods will be published October 2, 2009. The advance report on durable goods for September is scheduled for release October 28, 2009.

Summary
New orders for manufactured goods in June, up four of the last five months, increased $1.4 billion or 0.4 percent to $349.0 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau reported today. This followed a 1.1 percent May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 2.3 percent.
Shipments, up following ten consecutive monthly decreases, increased $4.9 billion or 1.4 percent to $358.3 billion. This followed a 0.8 percent May decrease. Unfilled orders, down nine consecutive months, decreased $6.5 billion or 0.9 percent to $740.2 billion. This was the longest streak of consecutive monthly decreases since November 2001-July 2002. This followed a 0.3 percent May decrease. The unfilled orders-to-shipments ratio was 6.04, down from 6.15 in May.
Inventories, down ten consecutive months, decreased $4.2 billion or 0.8 percent to $508.3 billion. This was the longest streak of consecutive monthly decreases since March 2003-January 2004 and followed a 0.8 percent May decrease. The inventories-to-shipments ratio was 1.42, down from 1.45 in May.
New Orders
New orders for manufactured durable goods in June, down following two consecutive monthly increases, decreased $3.6 billion or 2.2 percent to $159.1 billion, revised from the previously published 2.5 percent decrease. This followed a 1.3 percent May increase.
Transportation equipment, down following two consecutive monthly increases, had the largest decrease, $5.5 billion or 13.2 percent to $36.4 billion. New orders for manufactured nondurable goods increased $5.0 billion or 2.7 percent to $190.0 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, down eleven consecutive months, decreased $0.1 billion or 0.1 percent to $168.3 billion, revised from the previously published 0.2 percent decrease. This also was the longest streak of consecutive monthly decreases since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 2.7 percent May decrease. Computers and electronic products, down five of the last six months, had the largest decrease, $0.4 billion or 1.6 percent to $27.3 billion.
Shipments of manufactured nondurable goods, up two consecutive months, increased $5.0 billion or 2.7 percent to $190.0 billion. This followed a 0.9 percent May increase. This increase was led by petroleum and coal products, which increased $4.3 billion or 13.2 percent to $37.1 billion. This was the largest increase in petroleum and coal products since November 2007.
Unfilled Orders
Unfilled orders for manufactured durable goods in June, down nine consecutive months, decreased $6.5 billion or 0.9 percent to $740.2 billion, unchanged from the previously published decrease. This followed a 0.3 percent May decrease. Transportation equipment, down nine consecutive months, had the largest decrease, $6.0 billion or 1.4 percent to $433.3 billion.
Inventories
Inventories of manufactured durable goods in June, down six consecutive months, decreased $3.8 billion or 1.2 percent to $317.8 billion, revised from the previously published 0.9 percent decrease. This followed a 1.2 percent May decrease.
Computers and electronic products, down six consecutive months, had the largest decrease, $1.2 billion or 2.5 percent to $44.4 billion.
Inventories of manufactured nondurable goods, down ten consecutive months, decreased $0.4 billion or 0.2 percent to $190.6 billion. This followed a 0.1 percent May decrease. Chemical products drove the decrease, down $0.7 billion or 1.2 percent to $63.1 billion.
By stage of abrication, June materials and supplies decreased 1.3 percent in durable goods and increased 0.4 percent in nondurable goods. Work in process decreased 0.6 percent in durable goods and 0.8 percent in nondurable goods. Finished goods decreased 1.9 percent in durable goods and 0.4 percent in nondurable goods.

New orders for manufactured durable goods in June decreased $4.1 billion or 2.5 percent to $158.6 billion, the U.S. Census Bureau announced today. This decrease
followed two consecutive monthly increases including a 1.3 percent May increase. Excluding transportation, new orders increased 1.1 percent. Excluding defense, new
orders decreased 0.7 percent. Transportation equipment, down following two consecutive monthly increases, had the largest decrease, $5.3 billion or 12.8 percent to $36.5 billion.
Shipments
Shipments of manufactured durable goods in June, down eleven consecutive months, decreased $0.3 billion or 0.2 percent to $168.3 billion. This was the longest
streak of consecutive monthly decreases since the series was first published on a NAICS basis in 1992 and followed a 2.6 percent May decrease.

Shipments increased $0.4 billion or 4.3 percent to $10.8 billion. Unfilled orders decreased $2.2 billion or 1.5 percent to $142.2 billion. Inventories decreased $0.1
billion or 0.4 percent to $20.2 billion.
Revised May Data
